Serial Burglar Sentenced To 10 Years in Prison For A Home Burglary in Bellport

Arnaldo Marcano Was Out on Parole for Prior Suffolk County Burglary Convictions at the Time He Committed This Crime

(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced that Arnaldo Marcano, 42, of Bellport, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for burglarizing a home in Bellport. At the time of the burglary, Marcano had been released on parole for less than two years after having been sentenced to 19 years in prison for multiple prior burglary convictions.

“Recidivist offenders such as this defendant pose a serious risk to the safety of our communities,” said District Attorney Tierney.  “Everyone deserves a second chance, but I will not allow the same individuals to continuously commit crimes in Suffolk County and just get a slap on the wrist. We will be hold you accountable, and seek substantial prison sentences.”

According to the investigation and the defendant’s admissions during his plea allocution, on February 24, 2023, at approximately 12:25 a.m., Marcano broke a window of a residence in Bellport and entered into the home where he stole money before fleeing the residence on foot. Suffolk County Police Officers Edward Spillett and Matthew Spilotros of the Fifth Precinct saw Marcano walking down the street and apprehended him after realizing he matched the description given by neighbors.

At the time of this crime, Marcano was out on parole for multiple convictions from 2004 including Burglary in the First degree, a Class B violent felony, and six counts of Burglary in the Second Degree, Class C violent felonies. On December 7, 2004, Marcano was sentenced to 19 years in prison for those crimes, and was released from prison to parole on September 23, 2021. Additionally, in 2000, Marcano had been convicted of Attempted Burglary in the Third Degree, a Class E felony, in which he was sentenced to nine months in jail.

On May 4, 2023, Marcano pleaded guilty before Supreme Court Justice, the Honorable John B. Collins, to Burglary in the Second Degree, a class C violent felony. On June 7, 2023, Justice Collins sentenced Marcano to 10 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision. Marcano was represented by Jason Bassett, Esq.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Pamela J. Bloomfield of the Major Crime Bureau, with investigative assistance from Suffolk County Police Department Detectives Tracey Barry and John McGay.

Criminal complaints and indictments are merely accusatory instruments. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. No one is above the law.
