(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced the guilty plea of Omar Stevenson, 44, to Rape in the First Degree for sexually abusing a 12-year-old female.
“This defendant exploited a young girl who trusted him as a father figure. While his reprehensible actions can never be undone, hopefully this plea will bring some sense of closure to the child,” said District Attorney Tierney. “The defendant is expected to serve a substantial prison sentence for his actions, ensuring that he is separated from both the victim and the community.”
According to court filings and the defendant’s admissions at his guilty plea, Stevenson assaulted the young victim on four separate occasions from November 2021 through December 16, 2021. The crimes were discovered when Stevenson called the victim during the early morning hours after the last attack, but the victim did not answer the call. The victim’s mother discovered the ringing phone and confronted Stevenson as to why he was calling her child. The victim’s mother then discovered inappropriate text messages between Stevenson and the victim through the child’s social media account. The victim was taken to the hospital where she underwent an evaluation, and evidence was collected. Stevenson’s DNA was found on the clothing the victim wore during the last assault.
The defendant is due back in court before the Honorable Karen M. Wilutis on January 17, 2023. He is expected to be sentenced to 13 years of incarceration followed by 15 years of post-release supervision. Stevenson is represented by Howard Lee, Esq.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Melissa Grier of the Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau.
