Bay Shore Man Pleads Guilty to Attempted Murder

Sammie Darby Shot His Ex-Girlfriend in the Chest After a Jealous Rage

(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced the guilty plea of Sammie Darby, 22, to Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, after shooting his ex-girlfriend in the chest in a jealous fit a year ago in Bay Shore.

“This defendant used an illegal handgun to shoot and nearly kill his ex-girlfriend in a jealous rage,” said DA Tierney. “At a time where domestic and gun violence are so prevalent, this defendant’s plea sends a clear message that Suffolk County will tolerate neither.”

According to court filings, the defendant went to the victim’s apartment complex on November 30, 2021, where he found the victim in the parking lot with another man. After an argument, the defendant produced a 9 mm handgun and fired a round into the victim’s chest at point blank range. Darby then pulled the victim into his car, driven by a friend, and took the victim to the hospital where he left her at the check-in area to receive the necessary life-saving treatment for her injuries.

This case was heard before the Honorable Richard I. Horowitz. Darby is expected to be sentenced on January 17, 2023. He is being represented by Carl Irace, Esq.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Zachary Kelly of the Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau.

Criminal complaints and indictments are merely accusatory instruments. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. No one is above the law.
