Coram Man Sentenced for the Murder of His 17-year-old Brother

Dimitri Robert sentenced to serve 25 years to life for Murder and Weapons Possession Charges

(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced the sentencing of Dimitri Robert for the murder of his 17-year-old brother.

“In a fit of spite, this defendant took the life of his own brother and destroyed his family,” said Tierney. “This sentencing ensures he be unable to commit any more violent acts.”

Robert, now 30, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for Second Degree Murder and five years on each of the two charges for Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. He was also sentenced to two to six years in prison for Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the third Degree. All sentences will run concurrently.

The evidence at trial established that on October 1, 2019, Robert fatally shot his brother, Devontay Robert while the teen sat in the passenger seat of their mother’s rented 2019 Nissan Altima parked just outside of a relative’s home in Coram.

The defendant had been involved in a child custody dispute and blamed his own mother for helping the mothers of his five children keep them away from him. According to trial evidence, Robert said, “If I can’t see my kids, you are not going to see your kids.”

He was sentenced today by Hon. Supreme Court Justice Richard Ambro.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Francis X. Schroeder of the Homicide Bureau.

Criminal complaints and indictments are merely accusatory instruments. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. No one is above the law.
