Suffolk County Corrections Officer Arrested for Possessing Child Sexual Abuse Material

Robert Sorrentino Allegedly Accessed Images of Children Being Sexually Abused

(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced that Robert Sorrentino, 42, of Ridge, was arrested for Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child, for allegedly accessing child sexual abuse material on his cellular telephone. Sorrentino is a Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Officer, an active member of the United States Airforce Reserves, and a member of the Ridge Volunteer Fire Department.

“Unbelievably, because of current bail reform laws, my Office is legally prohibited from seeking bail in a case such as this, where an individual is charged with allegedly possessing child sexual abuse material,” said District Attorney Tierney. “Our legislators and Governor need to understand that only child predators would willingly and repeatedly possess child sexual abuse materials. Not allowing us to ask for bail is dangerous. As I have consistently warned, our bail laws are still broken, and they need to be fixed.”

“The alleged conduct of this employee is not only profoundly disturbing, but it is also a serious violation of the trust placed in law enforcement and the people we are sworn to protect,” said Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. “We will continue to work closely with the District Attorney’s Office on this matter and provide all assistance necessary as this case moves forward. While these charges are heinous and inexcusable, they are in no way a reflection of the dedication and professionalism of the men and women of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, who serve with integrity and honor.”

According to the investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation identified Robert Sorrentino’s cryptocurrency account as allegedly having been used to purchase child sexual abuse material. A joint investigation with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office subsequently linked the purchases of child sexual abuse material to Sorrentino’s home address in Ridge. The execution of a search warrant on Sorrentino’s iPhone revealed he had allegedly accessed numerous videos depicting sexual abuse of children between the ages of five and thirteen years old.

Sorrentino was arrested on April 16, 2026. He is scheduled to be arraigned at Suffolk County First District Court in courtroom D11 for seven counts of Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child, Class E felonies.

Under current New York State law, this crime is not bail eligible, meaning prosecutors cannot ask for, and judges cannot set, bail. He faces 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison if convicted. He is being represented by Michael Brown, Esq.

This case is being prosecuted by Katharine R. D’Aquila of the Public Corruption Bureau, and the investigation was conducted by the District Attorney’s Office’s Public Corruption Squad, the District Attorney’s Office’s Technical Services Unit, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Criminal complaints and indictments are merely accusatory instruments. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. No one is above the law.
