(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced that Marcos Aurelio Marques-Leal, 57, a lawful permanent resident from Brazil, was indicted for Murder in the Second Degree for the violent stabbing death of his estranged wife, Adriana Barbosa.
“The charges in this indictment reflect a horrifying act of domestic violence that claimed the life of an innocent woman and forever changed the life of a child who witnessed it,” said District Attorney Tierney. “No family should endure such terror, and no child should carry the trauma of seeing a parent killed before their eyes. We will pursue justice with unwavering determination, while keeping the victims at the center of this case.”
According to the investigation, on February 12, 2026, at approximately 8:15 p.m., Masques-Leal went to Barbosa’s residence in Farmingville, where she lived with their 16-year-old daughter. In violation of an order of protection issued in Family Court, he allegedly tried to enter the home through a side door. After finding it locked, he then allegedly attempted to kick the door down. After failing to gain entry, he allegedly went to the rear of the home, picked up a large planter from the deck, and threw it into the sliding glass door.
Barbosa and her daughter fled to Barbosa’s bedroom and locked the door, while the daughter called 911. The defendant allegedly found them, forced his way in, and, wielding a knife, lunged at Barbosa. The child put herself between her parents, trying to protect her mother. Reaching over his daughter, the defendant allegedly stabbed Barbosa in the head, neck, and body, causing her death. The child sustained defensive wounds to her hands. The defendant then stabbed himself in the neck and abdomen.
Responding officers found the family in the bedroom, each with varying degrees of injury. All three were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital. Barbosa was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
On March 2, 2026, Marques-Leal was arraigned on the indictment before Supreme Court Justice Richard Ambro for the following charges:
· Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A felony;
· Burglary in the First Degree, a Class B felony;
· Aggravated Criminal Contempt; a Class D felony; and
· Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a Class A misdemeanor.
Justice Ambro ordered Marques-Leal held without bail during the pendency of the case. Marques-Leal is due back in court on March 25, 2026, and faces 25 years in prison if convicted on the top count. He is being represented by Michael Ross, Esq.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Dena Rizopoulos of the Homicide Bureau and Assistant District Attorney Amanda Scheier of the Major Crime Bureau, and the investigation was conducted by Detective Daniel Hogan of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide Squad.
