Bellport Man Indicted for East Patchogue Murder

Darrell Trent Allegedly Murdered the Victim with a Crowbar

(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced that Darrell Trent, 46, of Bellport, was indicted for Second Degree Murder for the beating death of 45-year-old Carlos Bonaparte of East Patchogue in May 2025.

“This violent attack was allegedly committed in front of Mr. Bonaparte’s young child,” said District Attorney Tierney. “Such acts of violence have no place in our community. We will do everything in our power to see that the defendant is held accountable and faces the full force of the law. The victim and their family deserve nothing less.”

According to the investigation, on May 18, 2025, at approximately 2:45 a.m., Bonaparte was standing outside of his East Patchogue home with his young daughter when his girlfriend arrived at the home with her two cousins. A verbal altercation ensued between Bonaparte and his girlfriend’s cousin who then called Trent to the scene. Approximately five minutes later, Trent allegedly pulled up outside of the home, exited his vehicle with what appeared to be a crowbar, and intentionally plunged the claw end of it through Bonaparte’s skull and approximately one inch into his brain, killing him. The defendant allegedly committed this brutal act in front of multiple eyewitnesses, including the decedent’s young daughter. Bonaparte was taken to NYU Langone Hospital – Suffolk, where he was pronounced dead. Trent allegedly fled the jurisdiction and was arrested on May 23, 2025, in Shaker Heights, Ohio.

On June 9, 2025, Trent was arraigned on the indictment before Acting County Court Justice James McDonaugh for one count of Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A felony. Judge McDonaugh ordered Trent remanded without bail during the pendency of the case. His next court date is July 2, 2025. He is being represented by Matthew Touhey, Esq.

This case is being prosecuted by Elena Tomaro of the Homicide Bureau, and the investigation was conducted by Detectives Richard Jones and Frankie Sierra from the Suffolk County Homicide Squad.

Criminal complaints and indictments are merely accusatory instruments. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. No one is above the law.
