Former Town of Huntington Employee Pleads Guilty to Grand Larceny

Robert Chura Admitted He Stole Nearly $4K Worth of Town Tools and Sold Them for Profit

(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced the guilty plea of former part-time Town of Huntington security guard Robert Chura for stealing tools from the town and selling them for profit.

“Stealing public property is a serious crime. Especially when, as in this case, the defendant exploited his position as a public employee to benefit himself,” said District Attorney Tierney. “Fortunately, the only result he garnered from his scheme is a grand larceny conviction on his record.”

According to court documents and the defendant’s guilty plea, Chura, was employed as a part-time security guard by the Town of Huntington when he used force to enter a locked tool-storage room and stole three (3) hedge trimmers, two (2) chainsaws and two (2) leaf blowers.

The total value of stolen items was approximately $3,700. Chura confessed that he sold several of these items. Suffolk County Police Detectives identified Chura when he listed some of the stolen items for sale online.

This case was heard on July 18, 2022 before the Honorable Justice Richard I. Horowitz. He is due back in court for sentencing on September 28, 2022 and he is being represented by Joseph Carbone, Esq.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Carey Ng of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Public Integrity Bureau.

Criminal complaints and indictments are merely accusatory instruments. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. No one is above the law.
